معظمنا سمع عن التنين و خصوصا فى كرنفالات الصنيين و رأه فى الافلام الخيالية ينفث النار من فمه ناشرا الرعب بين من يواجهونه و رأيناه فى افلام الكرتون عندما كان نقار الخشب يلقى بالماء فى فم التنين فتنطفأ النار و يخرج من انفه دخان فيولى هاربا و من العجيب ان هذا الكائن الاسطورى حاضر ليس فقط فى كتب الاساطير و لا استديوهات هوليود و لكنه حاضر و بشدة فى كتاب اهل الكتاب والكلمة العبرية תּנּים او תּנּין ( tannîyn tannîym ) كثيرا ما تترجم الى Dragon هذا الكائن الاسطورى و الذى يتنوع شكله و يختلف اسمه بتنوع الاساطير و تنوع الشعوب الخصبة الخيال و التى أثار خيالها خوفها الى درجة انها صنعته بنفسها و تفننت فى صنع ادواته عبر الزمن .

The first type of Greek dragon was the Dracon whose name was derived from the Greek words "drakein" and "derkomai" meaning "to see clearly" or "gaze sharply." It was essentially just a giant serpent which was sometimes equipped with rows of sharp teeth, deadly poison or multiple heads. In myth the beast usually guarded a sacred spring, grove or golden treasure. Our own word "dragon" derives from the creature's name.

القديس جورج معروف لدى نصارى العرب بإسم مار جرجس أو القديس جورجيوس أو القديس مار كوكيس , وطبعاً لمعرفة النصارى بأن التنين مخلوق خرافي ليس له أصل على أرض الواقع , فهم ينكرون قصة القديس جورج ويبررون صوره وتماثيله الكثيرة المنتشره حول العالم بأى عذر هروباً من الإحراج .

مار جرجس من أكثر القديسين شهرة؟، وأعظمهم شعبية في الشرق والغرب. وقد انتشرت الحكايات الشعبية عنه حتى اختلط فيها التاريخ بالاسطورة، وتمثلت الحقيقة بصورة الزمن، بعد أن تبارى كبار الفنانين غرباص وشرقاً، في اخراج ظفر البطل المناضل بالشرير الرجيم، وانتصار الفارس القديس، للكنيسة، على عدوّها اللدود ممثّلاً بالتنين الشرس.
اسطورة التنين: وينتج من تحريات الآباء الولنديين أن ظهور التنين في حكاية مار القرن الحادي عشر. والتنّنن على ما استقر عليه جرجس لم يسبق التفسير، يمثل ابليس اللعين، عدوّ الكنيسة وأبنائها. وكما أن ابنة الملك ترمز إلى الكنيسة نفسها، عروسة المسيح، التي يهددها ابليس. ولا يخفى أن ابليس، في حكاية القديس جرجس، كان هو المتكلم في جوف أبولون، الصنم الأكبر. فيكون أن القديس جرجس بإسقاطه الأصنام وطرده ابليس من جوف الصنم الأكبر، قد خلّص الكنيسة من عدوّها اللدود. وهكذا اقترن الرمز بالحقيقة.

تحمل معنى رمزيًا:
فالعروس التي تظهر في الأيقونة تُشير إلى الكنيسة التي تتطلع إلى أبنائها الشهداء بفرحٍ واعتزازٍ.
والتنين يُشير إلى الشيطان الذي يحرك العالم الشرير ضد الإيمان.
والحربة تشير إلى صليب رب المجد يسوع الذي يهب النصرة.
وهزيمة التنين تُشير إلى هزيمة الشر ومصدره (إبليس) بقوة الإيمان.

تروي سيرته أن تنّيناً كان يعيش في بحيرة بالقرب من قرية صغيرة في ليبيا ويرعب الفلاحين حتى أنهم إتخذوه إلهاً لهم يقدّمون له أطفالهم ذبيحة فيصرف غضبه عنهم .

إسطورة التنين : وأهم هذه الأساطير قصة قتل كوركيس للتنين. وإسطورة ذبح التنين ليست مقتصرة على الشهيد كوركيس،وليست مسيحية الأصل،بل منها إسطورة قديمة جداً،تعود إلى العهد السومري في الألف الثالث ق.م. فإن ثمة روايتين عنها لدى سكان بلاد ما بين النهرين القدامى وقد عرفتها شعوب أخرى عبر العصور،كالمصريين أو الإغريق،فإن كلاً من هرقل وبرسيوس يذبحان تنيناً. أما في الأساطير السومرية فإسم الوحش (كور) وبطل الملحمة ( أنكي) إله الحكمة والماء. ويمكن تلخيص قصة التنين ومار كوركيس في ما يلي:
كان القديس عائداً إلى ذويه للإستراحة، أثر معركة خاض غمارها في مصر. ولما صار على مقربة من مدينة القيروان إستوقفه منظر غريب: جماهير غفيرة تتزاحم فوق الأسوار،يسمع لجلبتهم ولغطهم دويّ أشبه بعويل المناحة. فتقدم لمعرفة الخبر، فإسترعى إنتباهه منظر فتاة جميلة ترفل في ثوب أبيض،وتتقدم بخطى متثاقلة نحو مستنقع، يتوج رأسها إكليل من ذهب مرصّع باللآلىء،فسألها عن الأمر،فأجفلت وأجابته مرتعدة: إهرب يا سيدي لئلا تهلك معي. وبعد أن هدىء روعها،وعرفت أنه غريب،تأوهت وقالت: إن في البحيرة تنيناً مرعباً عجزنا عن قهره،كان يخرج إلى المدينة ويفترس كل من يصادفه وينفث السم في أوجه الكثيرين فيهلكون، فلإبعاد خطره أصدر الملك مرسوماً يقضي بإرسال غنمتين إليه في كل صباح،ولما أتى على آخر قطعاننا،إستبدلت الغنمتان بشاب أو فتاة يختارها سوء الطالع بالقرعة، وإني ضحية هذا الصباح. وعندما حاول والدي الملك إستبدالي ثار الشعب عليه. وها أنذا أسير نحو مصيري المحتوم. فإبتعد، سيدي، قبل أن يخرج التنين مطالباً بفريسته. وقبل أن تنهي كلماتها،خرج من قعر المستنقع حيوان ضخم الجثة،له شكل الحية والتمساح،ينفث من فمه لهيباً مسعوراً،فصرخت الفتاة هلعة. فوثب كوركيس وثبة النمر إلى ظهر جواده،وإستنجد بإلهه،وإنقض على التنين،وعاجله بطعنة من رمحه الطويل أصابته في شدقه،فجندلته صريعاً إلى الأرض. ثم نادى الفتاة قائلاً: هلمي وقيدي رقبة عدوك بزنارك، فإستفاقت الفتاة من غيبوبتها وكأنها تحيا من جديد، وفعلت بما أشار إليها، وقادا التنين نحو الأبواب. وقد ظن الناس في بادىء الأمر أنها ستنتقم منهم،إلا أنها هدأت من روعهم، وكلمهم كوركيس البطل أنه لن يضرهم بعد شيء إن هم آمنوا بالله. ودخل الفارس والفتاة وهي تجر التنين،فأراد الملك والشعب أن يسجدوا له، فمنعهم وشرع يرشدهم دين المسيح. وقضى ردحاً من الزمن في تلك المدينة،ثم ودعّ الجميع وهم يبكون وعرض عليه الملك أن يزوجه بإبنته،فأجاب: إن ما أبتغيه هو أن تحب الله وتخدمه ولا سيما في شخص الفقراء. ليس من صحة لإسطورة التنين،إنما هو (تقليد شعبي).

اسطورة التنين: وينتج من تحريات الآباء الولنديين أن ظهور التنين في حكاية مار القرن الحادي عشر. والتنّنن على ما استقر عليه جرجس لم يسبق التفسير، يمثل ابليس اللعين، عدوّ الكنيسة وأبنائها. وكما أن ابنة الملك ترمز إلى الكنيسة نفسها، عروسة المسيح، التي يهددها ابليس. ولا يخفى أن ابليس، في حكاية القديس جرجس، كان هو المتكلم في جوف أبولون، الصنم الأكبر. فيكون أن القديس جرجس بإسقاطه الأصنام وطرده ابليس من جوف الصنم الأكبر، قد خلّص الكنيسة من عدوّها اللدود. وهكذا اقترن الرمز بالحقيقة.

إسطورة التنين : وأهم هذه الأساطير قصة قتل كوركيس للتنين. وإسطورة ذبح التنين ليست مقتصرة على الشهيد كوركيس،وليست مسيحية الأصل،بل منها إسطورة قديمة جداً،تعود إلى العهد السومري في الألف الثالث ق.م. فإن ثمة روايتين عنها لدى سكان بلاد ما بين النهرين القدامى وقد عرفتها شعوب أخرى عبر العصور،كالمصريين أو الإغريق،فإن كلاً من هرقل وبرسيوس يذبحان تنيناً. أما في الأساطير السومرية فإسم الوحش (كور) وبطل الملحمة ( أنكي) إله الحكمة والماء. ويمكن تلخيص قصة التنين ومار كوركيس في ما يلي:
كان القديس عائداً إلى ذويه للإستراحة، أثر معركة خاض غمارها في مصر. ولما صار على مقربة من مدينة القيروان إستوقفه منظر غريب: جماهير غفيرة تتزاحم فوق الأسوار،يسمع لجلبتهم ولغطهم دويّ أشبه بعويل المناحة. فتقدم لمعرفة الخبر، فإسترعى إنتباهه منظر فتاة جميلة ترفل في ثوب أبيض،وتتقدم بخطى متثاقلة نحو مستنقع، يتوج رأسها إكليل من ذهب مرصّع باللآلىء،فسألها عن الأمر،فأجفلت وأجابته مرتعدة: إهرب يا سيدي لئلا تهلك معي. وبعد أن هدىء روعها،وعرفت أنه غريب،تأوهت وقالت: إن في البحيرة تنيناً مرعباً عجزنا عن قهره،كان يخرج إلى المدينة ويفترس كل من يصادفه وينفث السم في أوجه الكثيرين فيهلكون، فلإبعاد خطره أصدر الملك مرسوماً يقضي بإرسال غنمتين إليه في كل صباح،ولما أتى على آخر قطعاننا،إستبدلت الغنمتان بشاب أو فتاة يختارها سوء الطالع بالقرعة، وإني ضحية هذا الصباح. وعندما حاول والدي الملك إستبدالي ثار الشعب عليه. وها أنذا أسير نحو مصيري المحتوم. فإبتعد، سيدي، قبل أن يخرج التنين مطالباً بفريسته. وقبل أن تنهي كلماتها،خرج من قعر المستنقع حيوان ضخم الجثة،له شكل الحية والتمساح،ينفث من فمه لهيباً مسعوراً،فصرخت الفتاة هلعة. فوثب كوركيس وثبة النمر إلى ظهر جواده،وإستنجد بإلهه،وإنقض على التنين،وعاجله بطعنة من رمحه الطويل أصابته في شدقه،فجندلته صريعاً إلى الأرض. ثم نادى الفتاة قائلاً: هلمي وقيدي رقبة عدوك بزنارك، فإستفاقت الفتاة من غيبوبتها وكأنها تحيا من جديد، وفعلت بما أشار إليها، وقادا التنين نحو الأبواب. وقد ظن الناس في بادىء الأمر أنها ستنتقم منهم،إلا أنها هدأت من روعهم، وكلمهم كوركيس البطل أنه لن يضرهم بعد شيء إن هم آمنوا بالله. ودخل الفارس والفتاة وهي تجر التنين،فأراد الملك والشعب أن يسجدوا له، فمنعهم وشرع يرشدهم دين المسيح. وقضى ردحاً من الزمن في تلك المدينة،ثم ودعّ الجميع وهم يبكون وعرض عليه الملك أن يزوجه بإبنته،فأجاب: إن ما أبتغيه هو أن تحب الله وتخدمه ولا سيما في شخص الفقراء. ليس من صحة لإسطورة التنين،إنما هو (تقليد شعبي).
